How to check Indian Railways seat availability

Seat availability shows whether berths or seats are open for a train on upcoming dates. IRCTC displays status codes such as AVAILABLE, RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation), or WL (Waitlist) for each travel date, class, and quota combination.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the train number or search by train name (e.g. 12952, Mumbai Rajdhani).
  2. Select your journey date, boarding station code, and destination station code (e.g. NDLS → MMCT).
  3. Choose the travel class (3A, SL, etc.) and quota (GN for General, TQ for Tatkal).
  4. Click Check Seat Availability to view rolling availability for upcoming dates.

Understanding availability codes

  • AVAILABLE-0042 — 42 berths/seats are open for booking.
  • RAC 12 — you can book with a shared berth; may upgrade if others cancel.
  • GNWL24/WL11 — waitlisted; lower numbers have better confirmation chances.
