What is a PNR and how to check ticket status

Every confirmed or waitlisted Indian Railways e-ticket includes a unique 10-digit Passenger Name Record (PNR). It contains your train number, journey date, boarding station, berth preference, and current booking status for each passenger on the ticket.

Where to find your PNR number

  • On your IRCTC e-ticket PDF or SMS confirmation (labelled "PNR").
  • In the IRCTC app under My Account → Booked Tickets.
  • On a printed counter ticket in the top-right corner.

Understanding common status codes

CNF (Confirmed) means your berth is allotted. RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) lets you board with a shared berth and possible upgrade. WL (Waitlisted) means no berth yet—if it stays WL after chart preparation (~4 hours before departure), the ticket is cancelled and online bookings are refunded. See our full status code reference below for GNWL, PQWL, and other codes.

How to use this PNR checker

  1. Enter your 10-digit PNR in the form below (numbers only, no spaces).
  2. Submit to fetch live train details, passenger list, and current status.
  3. Check again closer to your journey date—status updates as cancellations occur.

Status information is fetched from publicly available railway enquiry sources. For official confirmation, verify on IRCTC or Indian Railways enquiry (139 / enquiry.138). RailCheck is not affiliated with IRCTC or Indian Railways.
